Y7 & Y8 rounders teams play in the District Tournament!

By Miss McGonigle

Year 8

The Year 8 rounders team played in the District Tournament on Monday 26th June in the warm sunshine. They were in good spirits and made a formidable team despite being from different friendship groups and of different abilities - it was lovely to see.

The team started with a hard-fought game against Chesham Grammar and lost by a few rounders. Dusting themselves off after discussing what they needed to work on they went on to win their next two games convincingly by a few rounders, lost their fourth game and finished on a high winning their last game in style by 6 rounders.

These excellent results in a round robin tournament saw them finish runners up to Chesham Grammar. A fantastic result for the team and an excellent display of rounders, sportsmanship and friendship!

The team was: Freya Ingham, Lizzy Tucker, Charlotte Walker, Sophia Martin, Olivia Leese, Jemima Burling, Fenella Ward, Eadaoin Maguire, and Jess Raymond.

Year 7

The Year 7 rounders team played in the District Tournament on Wednesday 28th June in the cold wind and rain, not rounders weather! Despite the chilly weather they were all very excited about their first District Tournament and played with lots of enjoyment throughout the tournament.

Their first game saw them narrowly win by half a rounder against Chesham Grammar B team – a little bit too much excitement at times when they were all screaming at the fielder to throw it to their post! Spurred on by their win they wanted to continue improving going into their next games and that they did. They went on to win their second game by 5 rounders, third game by 4 rounders and their fourth game by 3 rounders. After winning their pool they qualified for the semi-finals, by which time their excitement turned to some nerves, but they grouped together supporting one another and played very well, winning the semi-final by two rounders to qualify for the final.

The final was against Chesham Grammar A team - the very team that pipped the year 8 team to first place just two days previously. Knowing Chesham would be strong, and feeling the pressure of the final, the batting innings wasn’t quite what they wanted at the start but they picked it up on their second bats scoring 4 and a half rounders.

Chesham’s fielding was extremely strong and the team did well to reach that score. The team then took to the field and knew they needed to do a tight job but within the first 5 balls (they get 18) Chesham were already on 3 rounders - with 13 balls left it was looking a tough ask for the girls to keep Chesham’s rounders to below 4 and a half. The team dug deep and they fielded amazingly well, getting a number of the Chesham team out in quick succession meaning Chesham began to feel the pressure of getting the rounders to achieve the win.

As they got another half a rounder all they needed with 5 balls remaining was 1 rounder to draw level or a rounder and a half to win. Once again the girls did superbly well and their fielding kept Chesham at bay meaning the game finished 4 and a half to 3 and a half! The team was very excited by their win and their great display of team work, enjoyment and resilience was a joy to see. Well done to them all!

The Y7 team was: Molly Dickson, Kimi Leung , Aimee Hollingsworth, Fei-Bi Allen, Eesha Bains, Ella O’Dell, Xanthe Baker, Ellie Butler, Alexia Martin and Tilly Crampsie.
