Y10 Languages -French Trip
On Sunday 6 March, twenty six Year 10 students left to spend 5 days in Rouen intending to practise and improve their language skills, and find out more about French family life, culture and heritage.
When they arrived, their French hosts were all there ready to give them a warm welcome and eager to introduce them to their family, food and customs.
Every morning, the girls met at the Auberge de Jeunesse and the day started with an exchange of news and views on what had been happening the previous evening with the host families. Then, lessons taught by qualified instructors took place. The activities offered were all very engaging and mostly interactive. They ranged from playing board games, participating in a quiz, writing and performing in a play and making a music video. All in French, bien sûr!
In the afternoon, other cultural activities were organized. On those occasions students visited the medieval city of Rouen, the picturesque harbour town of Honfleur, and finally the magnificent palace and gardens of Versailles, and its perfume museum.
Students also attended an integration afternoon when they visited the professional Lycée de la Providence. There, they were greeted by French students and their teachers who had planned a cooking workshop, a quiz, and a visit of the school facilities which included a training hospital ward, and a hairdressing salon. The end of the visit was rounded off with a goûter offered by the school, where all the students were able to sample various French pâtisseries and get better acquainted to their fellow students.
Finally, in spite of this busy schedule, girls also had time for a game of bowling, a fun science workshop, and various sessions of shopping.
The evening was spent with the host families.
So, what did our students think of their French experience? Here are a few quotes:
“I really enjoyed the activities and experience as it helped me improve my French and I have learnt lots.”
“This trip has been one of the best and fun way to improve my French, to understand what it is like to be around a French community and family and the history behind the city.”

“I loved this trip, I learnt lots about the French language and culture and improved my speaking confidence. The family was so kind and welcoming and I had fun.”
