Hockey teams get off to a flying start this term!

Kat McGonigle, Head of PE

Last week saw the usual huge participation in extra-curricular sport as well as some outstanding performances in competitive sport.

Hockey was at the forefront with the County Heats taking place for the U14, U16 and U18 teams on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The U14’s kicked the week off in dramatic style reaching the semi-finals taking it to extra time and penalties. Unfortunately, we were on the wrong side of the 3-2 loss on penalties- obviously the curse of the English where penalties are concerned lives on in BHS! The team performed outstandingly well, having just come together this September to start playing 11 a-side hockey on a full pitch rather than their 7 a side hockey in year 7 and year 8. The team worked exceptionally hard all day and played some excellent hockey which was evident by their semi-final success, a hard blow to take losing on penalties but there is plenty more to come from this ever improving team.

The team is pictured below: Hermione Bhargava, Tabitha Hill, Eleanor Caffrey, Molly Ayre, Jemima Burling, Olivia Leese, Emilia Wijsman, Laura Luttrell, Emma Brosnan, Libby Thompson, Amelia Rae, Kendra Morris, Emma Gregson, Tilly Crampsie and Laura Dent.

The U18 team were the next up and, spurred on by the U14 team coming so close, they played some excellent hockey to win all their games and advance to the County Finals. They were feeling the pressure, knowing they have the potential to do very well and desperate to realise their potential and that they did – I have no doubt there will be more of the same this coming week.

The team is pictured below (as are their trusty mascots) - Sophia Everitt, Katie Webb, Imi Smith, Lauren Gallagher, Caroline Spence, Ibby Akinseye, Lauren Torley, Katie Jurdon, Am Robinson, Imi Relf, Maddy Peacock, Katie Sanders and Eleanor Buckeldee.

The U16 team were the last team to play in their county heats, and were keen to do well and advance to the county finals for the first time for the majority of the players in the team.

They started the day very well, beating Aylesbury High and then found themselves in a grudge match against Sir William Borlase. Realistically we knew we needed to beat Borlase or Wycombe High to be in with a chance of reaching the county finals so this was a big game. The team started very well and got an early goal but Borlase came back to equalise, however it was not long before we scored again going 2-1 up. We managed to hold the lead until the end and got an important win.

The team went on to carrying on their winning streak until they were beaten by Wycombe High in the last game but by then they had already qualified for the County Finals – an excellent achievement. They are very much looking forward to competing this week!

The team are pictured below: Elle Green, Niamh Holbrough, Lavinia Champion, Ellen Rowe, Alicia Fairman, Georgia Mill, Molly Miller, Katie Rowe, Annabelle Cowan, Jess Edmonds, Olivia Broderick, Hannah Burne, Zoe Jackson, Nicola Sykes and Mia Lasocki.
